KIERAN RATES: CONTEXT MC – 'LISTENING TO BURIAL' (CINEMATIC REMIX)

Drum n bass is a genre that I have stepped in and out of over the years. I had a notable love affair with it when I was younger. These days, I tend to treat the genre as more of a guilty pleasure at raves, or steeped in nostalgia...
After all, jungle and drum n bass sum up an era of dance antics and every drum n bass head has had a moment when listening to remixes of the likes of Roni Size, Prodigy and the rest. I’m not to be as clued up on the movements in the drum n bass arena as I once was, so it takes something special to turn my attention that way.
The lastest track to impress me comes courtesy of Norwich-born Context MC, and his remix of a song that has been doing the rounds for about a month, ‘Listening To Burial’. Remixed by production duo Cinematic, ‘Listening To Burial’ is an ode to the great dubstep don Burial, and it has reignited some of the reasons why I took to the genre in the first place.
After spending a lot of time listening to glitchy, pause-heavy, post dubstep beats, it’s almost a welcome rest to sit back and enjoy the vibe that Context MC serves up. Clear and easy to move to, the flow is careful and intelligent: “…intoxication is perennial, I’m floating down to earth, listening to Burial…” The female vocals give the whole thing a decidedly garage-like feel – one of the cornerstones of all urban music in the UK – and gives a real sense of place.
Full of empathy, the track is wholly self-referential. He talks about himself, his experience of music, demanding the world not to interrupt that universal moment when we close our eyes, and to put in our earphones and just let everything else fade away.
